Sometimes it is easier to listen. A selected passage should be a short interaction away from clear speech, with playback controls that stay out of the way.
My contribution
I maintain Just Aloud as an independent Speak11 derivative, with a native menu-bar interface and a public release. The original project by Stefano Martiniani is credited in the repository.
